Allied Attempt to Invade France at Normandy Unsuccessful
Thousands of Allied soldiers killed. Only small beachhead still held by Allied forces. German Panzer units head toward beaches to destroy survivors. Germans still hold mainland of Europe!
June 6, 1944, Normandy coast.
An incompetent attempt to invade the Continent of Europe failed today as thousands of Allied soldiers either drowned or were killed by German and other Axis forces that were waiting for them. The rest are hanging on by their fingernails, vainly waiting for reinforcements, as the Germans prepare a massive counterattack.
The failure was multifaceted.
1. No invasion on such a scale has ever even been attempted. The Allied forces blundered by using an unproven strategy of amphibious invasion.
2. The terrible weather greatly increased losses by drowning. The Allied failed utterly to predict the weather.
3. The German Army had built a vast fortified wall around Europe and the weakly held beachheads will soon be wiped out by superior German land forces.
4. The attempts to bomb the beaches before the amphibious assault was a farce, since, to avoid hitting their friends on the ground, virtually the entire attacking air units overflew the German forces and dropped their bombs uselessly behind them.
5. Resupply of forces that have landed will be attempted by means of a completely untried floating highway that was carried rolled up on invading ships and unrolled to form a bridge. The Germans will surely sink these vulnerable structures before they can land enough supplies to matter. This was due to the strategic error in failing to attack the major French harbors.
It is a terrible day for the Allies today. Any hope that we have of loosening Hitler's grip on Europe has surely perished on these beaches.
