There's no doubt when faced with horrible realities people can act extremely harshly and with unclear judgement. I read a story a long time ago about an American POW who was murdered by irrate guards after Hiroshima. In that case the POW had nothing personally to do with the destruction of Hiroshima. In the case you mention the guards at Dachau had the blood of their victims on their own hands.
