re: Manhattan Project

This isn't really what you asked for, but I have heard a few stories from the era that I find interesting. The first I heard first hand the second was secondhand.

As a teenager, I worked for an orchardist who was a kid during WWII. He lived just outside of Prosser WA. He never left the valley he was in till he was in his twenties. One day as a teenager he decided to drive his tractor to the top of a nearby hill, that he'd never looked over before. When he got to the top he looked down on Hanford. Having had a look at a bunch of buildings he didn't understand he turned his tractor around and headed for home. He says he was intercepted by G-men before he got home and told never to drive to the top of that hill again. He got so scared he never did. Hanford was one of the sources of the plutonium for Fat Man and Little Boy

Another story is that the Japanese used to build balloons to cross the Pacific. When the touched ground they were supposed to explode and set the forests of Washington and Oregon ablaze. The Japanese having launched thousands of balloons never heard word of them through their intelligence system, so they gave them up. The farmer who told me the above story told me of one of his acquaintenaces that discovered one of the ballons. After putting out the small brush fire it started her father alerted the local police. Within hours a G-man came by took the remains of the object and told her to never speak of it again. In the 70's she read an article about the balloons and finally understood what had landed near her house. It was only after that that she felt comfortable enough to tell people the story.

I never knew if the story was true until I just did a google search on the subject. This is what I came up with. http://www.fact-index.com/f/fi/fire_balloon.html

Interesting stuff.
