I guess anything is possible...
...but as Tony suggests, if it's clear communication they're after, you'd think they'd simply introduce themselves in some unmistakable fashion.
OTOH, if the symbols are a test of our intellect, then we're failing abysmally...which probably shouldn't be too surprising. If there are enlightened civilizations out there, I doubt we're anywhere near ready to join them.
