Hi, Raoul.
Last night, on television, there was a 'science' special
on the Comet Swift-Tuttle.
The television show was plainly awful...it was BAD!
The television special had bad science, bad astronomy, bad documentation and irresponsible and erroneous narration and editorializing.
The show was based on the false premise that Comet Swift-Tuttle
will likely hit the planet Earth on August/14/2126.
NONSENSE!
Nearly all astronomers agree that the "nucleus" of Comet Swift-Tuttle will miss the Earth by [0.15 AU] 2.3 million kilometers. It won't hit us at all
in 2126.
Our planet's atmosphere MIGHT get a brush from the comet's "coma".
and that's all.
The "coma" and "tail" will only cause a spectacular "meteor shower", don't you agree, Raoul?
By the way, the TV show had some more instances of "bad astronomy":
The narrator said, "[QUOTE] Comet Shoemaker-Levy-9 left a CRATER
on Jupiter when it impacted in 1994.[UNQUOTE]".
A CRATER on Jupiter????
YEA, SURE!!....That's a laugh....
:-)
