The partisans killed 32 German SS soldiers and wounded many others with all the conspirators escaping. Upon hearing of this Hitler ordered 50 Italians killed for every dead German; only with difficulty was he persuaded to lower this to 10. His orders were brutally carried out with the murder of 335 Romans in the Ardeatine caves hours after the bomb attack.
