The myth of omnipotent law

Insufficient regulations might be the problem in the Enron case if those who had committed the offenses had not broken any existing laws or regulations.

In fact, they broke many of them. This is why so many Enron people are in legal trouble.

If you wanted to discuss better methods for catching crooks, or argue that the penalties are insufficient, these could be real issues. But simply stacking more laws on the books aren't going to keep people from breaking them. Regulations tend to impress the type of person who probably wouldn't need the regulation in the first place to do the right thing.

This is the mistake made by those who think the answer to keeping crooks from possessing guns is to pass more laws against crooks having guns. Hello? They're crooks. Breaking laws is part of the job description. Work on the enforcement end.

The truth is that this is just being held up as an example by a lot of people who are hostile to capitalism in the first place.
