Iraq had a WMD program. It's a fact. It existed and existed covertly against UN regulations and in defiance of the 1991 ceasefire.
The resolution that was passed under which th troops have died were not solely searching for WMD but were used to defend the US from the threat posed by Iraq and Saddam Hussein.
Saddam Hussein, who initiated the illicit WMD programs after the gulf war and defied the US by breaching the terms of the ceasefire, has been deposed and now sits in a cell awaiting trial. The troops in Iraq are now dying because the nation is a political prize for Shiite fanatics and US troops are the flypaper that attracts illiterates from Saudi Arabia, Syria, Iran, Jordan and wherever blind hatred of 'infidels' is espoused.
If anything we see the true scope of the problem in the region and for the first time America and the world is aware of the true scale of the ignorance which spawned 9/11. Iraq becomes more important than ever. Once the new government takes the reigns and their powerbase is cemented - the US troops will cease to be targets. Already these ignorant killers attack the various ministers and the folks who would bring knowledge, peace and prosperity to the Iraqi people. These Iraqis themselves believe their assassins are from other lands and are paid to try and thwart this bringing of freedom.
To pretend that if Bush left Saddam in power the Middle East would leave the US alone is in error. It was leaving them alone that brought about the death of 3000 people and from the plans revealed today it was clear they wanted to kill tens of thousands.
I have no regrets about supporting the war in Iraq and the removal of Saddam. My position has not changed a bit. I do not diminish the deaths of Americans or try to portray such deaths as futile - because they were not.
These men and women died protecting Americans.
They did so under the authorization of the Congress which represents the people of the United States of America.
Period.
