Why do I get the impression your sudden turn to the liberal position of wanting to allow this young man his rant is not dictated by your feeling for his rights, but your approval of his message?
The truly liberal position-aka leftist on these boards-would be the position taken by Voltaire, "I may not agree with what you have to say, but I will defend to the death your right to say it." When you come to understand this, you will understand liberalism and will probably become one.
This young man appears not to be seeking open discourse as much as to gain attention by disruptive tactics. His diatribes against his "socialist teacher" etc. are the garbage tactics that typify the ditto heads and are intended to polorize positons. This should be given no place in an educational setting.
Yelling fire in a crowded theater is not freedom of speech.
I agree with Lindy that this young man is the victim of hate and vituperation and has been well home schooled. I feel sorry that his lack of education has him think himself a victim of the repression of free speech. He has not sought, nor has he found the proper forum to reguritate his parents right wing polemic and is looking for peer recognition by playing at the role of being the victim.
Our student has also heard of the terror card and attempted to play it in his threat of legal action in his interview. Good deal, coercion will help me get my way. Wow, has this kid been taught.
You know, I agree he is a victim. Being a liberal I wish him well and hope he outgrows it.
