The key was in the phrase "Is there any easy way (key word being "easy")..."--I see I've trained you well!
Modifying the software running on the server is a massive job full of potential pitfalls--I could nuke not only the Zone, but the entire server, and find myself in a world of hurt. That's why over the years I've tended to resist good suggestions that would have to be done in the server software.
But in this case what you asked for was something that I anticipated doing long ago. Back when I wrote the server software I had it put information in the TOC HTML output that could be used someday by a script running on the Web page to manipulate the appearance of the TOC. The server software part was already in place, and when you jogged my memory of my intentions, it took but a couple of hours to write the Web page script that takes advantage of those old "hooks". All I had to do then was splice the new code into the master TOC template, and viola! a TOC highlighting tool.
I was in a bit of a hurry, though, and didn't test it with Mozilla. That occurred to me just now, and damn, it doesn't work. It needs a bit more fiddling--Mozillaheads stay tuned.
So there ya go. I got to spend a pleasant few hours hacking, and you got a useful little widget. Life is good.
BTW, can you guess whose name I used to test the highlight-by-author feature? Which name would generate the most highlights? Admit it, which name did you use?
