I'm not too clear on why you don't use Mozilla to view HZ. I fired it up for this session at the Zone, and everything seems to work.
Of course, there's Mozilla and then there's Mozilla...or perhaps I should say Mozillas. The people behind it once upon a time promised a standard browser, but the reality has turned out like "standard UNIX"--a myriad of versions and a myriad of browser implementations using the core Mozilla "engine". Not only is Mozilla constantly changing with new releases, the developers are muddying the waters themselves by introducing variations on Mozilla like FireFox. What am I, as a Web site developer, to make of the statement in their FAQ that "Note, though, that Firefox is not just the standalone Mozilla browser."? It was hassle enough to make the site work with IE and one version of Mozilla; it seems like I'm faced with having to make the site work with IE and a dozen versions of Mozilla. This is not the nirvana that Mozilla promised us lo these many years ago.
Thanks for listening to my rant. Now, back to our show...
I figured the "highlight posts by..." feature would facilitate "always read" lists...for better and worse. It also enables people with grudges to keep a lookout for their favorite villains and spring to the attack. Well, Web page features don't kill people, people kill people. Not my fault!
The new script can be extended to support DNR, by editing the TOC to remove posts (and all replies) by anybody on a "shit list". The list could be stored in a cookie to run automatically each time the TOC is loaded. But I have some reservations about the social impact. It's the same problem as the "Balkanization" of news sources--it's a feature that would divide the Zone into discontiguous groups--people would have different experiences of the HabitableZone. I'm not sure it would be good to add a feature that would tend to subtly alienate people. What's your take?
