A little more clearly: someone investigating the U.N.'s handling of Iraqi oil funds has been assassinated by terrorists.

Why? What do terrorists and insurgents have to gain from this? What do they have to lose if the investigation proceeds?

To put it even more clearly: If the Mafia had killed a major figure investigating the Watergate break-in years ago, what would that imply?
