I imagine it should have been a standard procedure for Air Force jets to immediately escort any hijacked plane in U.S. airspace. If it wasn't then someone should be fired!

It doesn't take much to shoot down a commercial airplane. I bet they could have scrambled SOMETHING that day that could have prevented the Pentagon crash.

There should be SAMs in every major potential target area. As long as there is Israeli style airport security on the one hand the American people will accept the fact we may have to shoot down a very small number of civilian airplanes on the other.
