If there was classified CIA stuff going on, and exactly what is becoming a very interesting question (extraoridinary renditions?) Obama did not need to invent the "video" story. A simple "investigations are under way" would have done just fine. After all, it's what he settled on when the video story blew up in his face.
The video story makes sense only in one context: the president needed to save his foreign policy "success" agenda, and to do that, this incident had to be an unpredictable and random event, not a planned and professional 9/11 attack by the people who were supposed to be under control.
I'm not at all surprised by the kind of intellectual disconnection that can defend Obama at a debate when he declares he said it was a terrorist attack from the beginning, and simultaneously accept him excusing the video story by saying it was his best information at the time. But then, intellectual disconnection is a liberal job requirement.
