In Virginia. Don't know the exact law in California, but I do know that when I was out in the back of Gold Country, old guys walking around with a revolver on their hip were far from uncommon.
Oddly, I didn't have any great fear that one of them would shoot me, any more than I am worried that the guy driving past me while I'm walking on the sidewalk will suddenly hop the curb and deliberately run me down.
