The cost of citrus production has proven to be prohibitive in Florida.

We should no more protect the citrus industry in Florida than we protect the citrus industry in Minnesota.

The fact is, that many citrus growers can make more money selling their farms to land developers than they can growing crops. Until that issue is addressed, there will be a continued shrinkage of the citrus industry in Florida. (But somehow I think the Florida politicians won't start out on an anti-development crusade.)

And with all this talk of global warming, many will be suprised to learn that most parts of Florida have become to cold for economical citrus production. (You must burn a lot of fossil fuel to keep the trees alive during the winter freezes that are really quite common in central Florida (the former primary citrus growing region).
