I have owned a 40 mature grove in Hardee County, and a 20 acre grove in Highlands County, and once owned a citrus nursery. I thought I knew something about the round orange business.
Then I read your post. Apparently one of us doesn't have a clue and is speaking out of his posterior orifice.
Hell, I missed those freezes you think happened. Apparently I was spending too much time in my swimming pool.
When you say, ".. many will be suprised to learn that most parts of Florida have become to cold for economical citrus production." This is major news and Florida Citrus Mutual will be suprised to have this revealed. This might be a blessing as production reaches 300 million bruce boxes per year.
Then you go on to say, "(You must burn a lot of fossil fuel to keep the trees alive during the winter freezes that are really quite common in central Florida (the former primary citrus growing region)." FYI I don't know of any growers using smudge pots anymore or burning ANY fossil fuels other than in tractors and trucks.
In fact (to use your term) your post exhibits such a monumental ignorance of the Florida citrus agribusiness that I am astounded and quite embarrassed for you.
