re: If you don't like the UN, can you do something about it?

"Yes, many intellectuals, many politicians, worldwide, regret that not interfering with internal matters of sovereign states is very damaging to populations when human rights are clearly abused and dictators do whatever they want with their own people.
That is one of the purposes behind the creation of the ICC. Why can't the US sign it , then? It's about avoiding dictators' impunity."

Perhaps, Raoul, you can provide us some micheal moore type conspiracies theory which explain why?
Don't be shy about being really loose the facts & as funny as possible- I could use the belly laughs.

"Why not be pro-active at the UN, instead of destructive? By invading and occupying Iraq unilaterally, the US has squandered chances to get more pro-active decisions and agreements at the UN about dealing with human rights abuses in countries. "

Let's see. First, it wasn't unilateral.
Second, I don't see how the US by acting in a manner which is supportive of promoting human rights, is squandering anything in this regard. For example, in Afghanistan large amounts of people are voting with their feet by returning to that country. Another example is Iraq which now has a Free Press. Not to mention the prospects of having free elections in both these countries.
The next point is why is it that "apparently" only the US has an interest in human rights- why has upsetting other countries causing them to "punish" the US by not acting with us in matters of human right issues. Doesn't France have *ANY* interest in promoting human rights?

"Some UN commisioners come from countries with an age-long disrespect for human rights? Yes, it's true, but those commissioners do not represent their country, but the UN. Those commissioners are not alone, they're surrounded by commisioners from other countries. It's very easy to check on everyone's tasks."

Well, I can say with certainty that the US commissionors are suppose to represent the US. If these guys are not representing our country, then they should be fired immediately. I guess other countries are free to have their commissioners represent the UN if that is what they want. But I think what might be happenning is that these guys don't like to admit they are representing their countries.
