It would just be great if we could figure out a better/fairer method to tax.
Sales tax rules can be complex; however, they are nowhere near as complex as dealing with the Federal income tax. (The AMT alone is more complicated than most individual State's sales and Use tax regulations)
I agree the politicians will play games with what is exempt and what is not exempt. But those games are already played under the current system.
I say let me keep 100% of what I earn. I'll willingly pay a 20% sales tax if it means I can keep my share of the income tax. (And the truth is I'll probably still pay more). Just give me (and not the IRS the choice).
The poor are hit hard by a sales tax...But its funny I don't see the leftists screeming that the State sales tax rates should be reduced. That problem could be addressed in other ways (Food, medical tratments, drucgs, etc... are already exempt in most states, there is no reason to suspect that it wouldn't be different for a Federal Sales Tax.
The biggest problem comes back to savings: A sales tax would exempt savings by default. That fact in and of itself makes me for a sales tax on moral grounds... It's wrong to tax people for engaging in good/wise behavior.

Nobody is asking the politicians to give up the power to tax.
