What if it did make things worse? Maybe such hardship would harden the will of Western Civilization and make us more protective of what we've got. Instead of having a bleeding heart, we'd have a heart of iron and do whatever was necessary to maintain our way of life. Putting our own needs and security first wouldn't be such a bad thing.
