Space/Science » in reply to Greg Bear's "Moving Mars" is a fine book

Looks interesting

Just read a synopsis of the plot on a website. Interesting concept that the universe is a computer and moving a planet is as simple as changing the directory it exists in on the hard drive.

My boyish spirit though seems to lean more towards really ways of relocation that require huge amounts of energy, crashes or explosions. Let's see, if we start tweaking the orbits of a bunch of Kuiper Belt objects now we should be able to slam a whole lot of them into Mars. Even if we can't move the orbital path much, it'd sure be fun to observe the mess we create from orbit. Then a few years after, (once the dust settles) we put rovers down to see the excavations we've caused.

I say we do the same thing with our own moon. It's orbit is slowly moving it away from the Earth. A few nudges back would be really fun and it'd be great science to sit back and observe the impacts. As an added treat we can time the asteroid hits to happen on the evening of 4th of July as an addendum to the fireworks displays.
