Mars is the easiest world in the Solar System to colonize. If we can't colonize Mars then we're trapped on the Earth. Then it's just a matter of time before the killer asteroid, killer virus, extreme climate change, name your favorite nightmare takes us out. It would be much easier to colonize Mars while we still have a large natural resource base and robust industrial economy. After we have consumed the inexpensive/abundant natural resources and our industrial economy (along with the world's population) has collapsed back to a nineteenth century level, the option of Mars colonization will be gone. It boils down to our fitness to survive as a species.
Based upon current information, I would say that we are not fit to survive. Please convince me that I'm wrong.
