What George Bush Sr. would say now is irrelevant

Precisely because, due to understandable human nature, whatever he said now would be clouded by the fact that if he came out against the war, he would be going against his son and eroding his political power. I'm afraid it truly doesn't matter what Bush Sr. would say publicly today.

So Mark, I have a hard time understanding how our worldwide military strategy changed so remarkably with an attack from a group representing no single nation. Yeah, we felt exposed and vulnerable but wouldn't you agree that the finest military strategists of history were those that weren't reactive and impulsive but instead masters of long-term thinking? Afghanistan was a no-brainer. There was clear and compelling evidence that the very people that had planned and trained the terrorists that struck us had come from that country.

The issue here is Iraq and not 9/11. How any educated person can see a direct link there after a long period of hindsight is beyond me. My guess is now that it's the embarassment of not wanting to admit a mistake. Can you truly believe that we're now safer from terrorism now than we were in the days after 9/11? Seems to me we're more a target than ever.
