Terrorist are people with reasons for doing what they do. Bin Laden contrary to what Bush says doesn't care about our freedom. He wants power and followers and he needs an enemy for his followers. He lost the Russians as Satan a few years back and pick us as the next Satan (he once thought Hussien would make a good target).
If we left the middle east Bin Laden would have a hard time pushing the agenda, but we would lose control of what we need. This had nothing to do with compassion for Iraq's people and never has been about Hussein is evil. We supported him when it was good for us and would have ignored his invasion of Kuwait if we still needed him. He should have done it during the war in Afghanistan.
To win against terrorist you marginalize them. Bush simply doesn't have the finesse to do this.
