This is an interesting topic and one which I've personally investigated. If you can remember back several years ago on the MSNBC Space board we discussed them at length several times. In Great Britain, there is a press black out on them due to national security concerns.

I too, thought they could be a form of advanced aircraft, however, some of my eyewitness accounts go back several decades. Seeing as I described them several years ago, I will again bring them up here, starting with the most recent one, not too far from where I live.
Around 1997-98, on Hwy. 70 which runs between here and the coast, a couple of guys in their SUV were watching some bright lights pace them in the middle of the night. This is in the middle of nowhere......seriously. All of a sudden the lights were upon them and they pulled over to let it pass. It stopped and hovered over their truck, and one guy got out. Not only did he get the typical description, but he said it was nearly silent, and with the exception of a slight rumble, shot off several thousand feet up within a matter of seconds. They were very shaken, but were known as outstanding members of the community at that time. Since then, if I drive that road coming back from the coast at night, it kind of makes me feel creepy.

Next case comes from a young man I worked with. He was from Belgium and had been in the army over there. Told me he had seen one while out on a manoever one night and it surprised he and his team members.
He thought it was fantastic and from "out of this world". This was in Belgium during 1989, when your country first started having the sightings.

Third case I personally know about comes from a man who lived barely 10 miles from me up in Ontario in the 70's, during the time period I was having all my experiences. He wrote in to the editor of the Toronto Star asking if anyone else living in our town had seen anything similiar. This was TEN YEARS LATER. He and his brother had been out in the back yard wrestling when it hovered above them barely 50 feet up. It changed his life. He could never forget it, hence the letter. An astute friend saw the letter, sent it to me and I contacted the young man. During the interview, he described the same aerial phenomena we were experiencing on a weekly basis in the very same area at the very same time (1975). (However my sighting was a disk).

Earliest case was from 1965, and I happened upon the man as a fluke here in town. A friend of a friend, I was visiting his house and I noticed a PAINTING of a triangular craft on his living room wall. I asked him who painted it and why he had it. He said he and another pilot had almost hit it while flying up north back in 1965. Said it was about three stories tall and left a greenish glow in their cabin. Gave me the co-pilot's name and brought out the log book. It was that ingrained in his mind.

I have maintained somewhat of an interest in unidentified flying objects as time permits. Lately, just paying bills and keeping the roof over the house (literally.........seems to be more important). Whatever it is, it shares the same space as us, or the same dimension at the same time.
