I have read that the development of clothing, at least in Eurasia, can be dated by DNA variance analysis of the separation of body lice from pubic lice. Once clothes were regularly worn, and rarely washed, a new ecological niche was created.

The DNA "clock" for body lice dates their speciation at 75 ka, in the depths of the recent glacial epoch.
