Period. Nothing.

Couldn't be won, China and Russia wouldn't let it. The US couldn't get out, the juvenile jingoists would have hooted and hollared.

So, the killing went on and on and on.

For no reason.

And some people could see that and protested.

War is a crime, and fighting it is just a series of war crimes. It ain't all people in uniforms, trenches, etc. It's a series of war crimes.
