Intention is any important element in any action. And the simple fact of the matter is that a firearm with a thirty-round clip, and a rapid fire conversion kit is not intended for any sporting, defensive action, or any other legitimate action that I can think of.
I write this as a serious gun collector, a shootist, and former range safety instructor.
And to illustrate how nutty the NRA has gotten, at a recent gun show in Lakeland, Florida, one table was selling Ruger Mini-14's, the next table sold banana clips and phamphlets on converting your semi-auto Mini to fully automatic, the very next table sold the hardware to make the conversion.
All of this was "legal" because no single vendor was selling either an auto weapon or providing the customer with the means to make a weapon automatic.
There is no justification for our society to tolerate automatic weapons.
