As I've said before, I don't know what I would've done had my number been called during the Vietnam draft. To try to go back today and understand the dynamic that was facing young men back then is insane and a waste of time. Somehow I doubt that most of the men that left their country and went to Canada feel like celebrating their decisions. Had I felt compelled to go I'm certain it would've been a horrible decision to have had to make. To leave your friends and the land of your birth is like the loss of a limb.
Yeah, there were a certain number of the deserters that simply went to prevent an end to their partying days but for many it was a huge sacrifice, an embarassment and involved a tremendous amount of soul searching and internal conflict.
