1. Usually the most popular player on a football team is the back-up QB.

2. Also, with the obvious fact that the War is not going as well as we would like, many think McCain would have somehow either avoided the war or would be handling it better. This is just an extension of #1.

McCain is a cranky guy and this is what cost him the nomination imo. Not running for anything and supporting Bush is a plus for him.
