re: Laughter and daughter
You are expecting American English to be logical?
To use a somewhat dated colloquialism, Puuuuuuuuhhhhhhhhhhhleeeeeeeeese.
English, American style is such a hodge-podge of so many languages it’s a wonder it has rules at all.
From Latin Based roots with a heavy dose of Saxon, stir in Spanish, French and Teutonic, flavor generously with more than a little Arabic and Asian, top off with a sprinkling of Native American, all tribes. Bake for half a Millennium. Cool in the light of nationwide media and pop culture.
There you have it, a dynamic and constantly evolving language. That drives me nutz.
