We had directions to the county courthouse available for people who wanted to make the trip to drop their form off. A 25-minute drive and 75 cents to park. Some people were just incensed.
As I've said before, sometimes I think our society would be improved if registration and voting was made a bit more difficult, rather than something that a normal person could do in their sleep.
To the "incensed" voter:
If you can't be bothered to fill out and mail a registration form in the years between elections, or make the deadline with commercials screaming in your ears to register (remember, you only have to re-register if you've moved or something), or haul your sorry butt the few blocks most people have to travel to vote, or arrange for a mail-in ballot (the latter becoming way too easy--this is going to backfire at some point), then maybe you just aren't that serious about it, and we'd be better off without your vote screwing it up for those who actually care about such things.
