re: Detail

The actual report, which comes out annually, can be found here.

Fisking this would take me pages. I don't get paid for this. But look through it. Examine the assumptions. Who picks the species out of hundreds of thousands for their graphs and analyses? What is the actual numerical factor for defining "wilderness?"

Look how nuclear power is handled (boldface mine):

The fossil fuel footprint is calculated here as the area required to sequester the CO2 released when fuels such as coal, oil, or natural gas are burnt, less the amount absorbed by the ocean. Other accounting methods are discussed on page 22. The fuelwood footprint is the area of forest needed to grow it. Nuclear power, about 4 per cent of global energy use, does not generate CO2. Its footprint is calculated as the area required to absorb the CO2 emitted by using the equivalent amount of energy from fossil fuels.

What kind of assumption is that? Since nuclear power generates no CO2, we'll just assume it does for our calculations? What am I missing here? Is it that in an accurate calculation of this kind, nuclear power would have a negative footprint, which would be politically incorrect?
