Some pretty impressive work on Gravity Probe B, too.
Most of this is way over my head...I worked on the helium gas management system (valves, tubes, etc.).
The quartz telescope is attached to the main quartz block by polishing their surfaces to such a smoothness that they bond using molecular forces. There is no adhesive at all.
