It uses sperical (pefect to a few atoms spherical) quartz balls, coated in Nickel cooled to superconducting temperatures... all housed in a nearly magnetic field free volume created by inflating superconducting lead balloons to push out the magnetic field lines...

That whole project is an execise in the extreme cutting edge.
