re: An alternative

When I was a kid in Minnesota, city trucks would come by and spray the front lawns. My dad still sprays the lawn, and this seems to help a lot.

You are correct that eliminating breeding areas is a big help. This is a lot easier in dry climates like the one I live in now. In the Land of 10,000 Lakes, you can pretty much forget it.

We don't have a lot of mosquitoes. When I was back in Minnesota last summer, they settled on you in clouds. Went to a cemetery to visit departed relatives, and had to flee like rabbits in front of a forest fire.

Around here in California we watch for buckets, old tires, and other items that catch water. Stagnant water is what it's about for mosquitoes, and they can hatch in surprisingly little. My backyard pond is not stagnant, having filters and a waterfall, and it's filled with voracious little fish.

I also encourage spiders and other predators in the yard. Dragonflies are a great mosquito-eater, but they are more numerous in damp climates, too.
