re: Murder made respectable

The 100,000 figure is not at all bogus. It may not be 100% correct, but the authors never claimed it was - it is an estimate, an extrapolation, after all, and is subject to the potential errors of any such number.

Your link makes a big deal out of the fact that, statistically, there is a 97something % chance that the actual number is between 4000 and 196000, however this is a normal statistical caveat and merely indicates that the study is not precise, not that it is bogus. Again, the authors freely admit the limitations of their study.

There is a reasonable probability that the 100,000 figure is close to the real number of excess deaths in Iraq since the invasion, but until someone goes out and counts every single dead body, there will not be a perfectly accurate estimate. In the meantime, this seems to be the best study so far available.

Why do you think this is an unreasonable number? In a war-torn country of 25 million people, with a heavily damaged infrastructure, death rates will obviously go up. Look at the increases in acute malnutrition among Iraqi children since the invasion - and this is only one factor of many that would increase death rates.

Does the thought of 100,000 dead people make you lose sleep?
