Space/Science » in reply to Space exploration by humans is not for the timid

re: Manned space exploration

If it's perhaps not very wise to use statistics in the present state of manned space exploration, we notice nevertheless that accidents took place at liftoff or re-entry and whether astronauts go to the Moon, Mars or simply LEO, it still looks like the first and last phases of their mission are the most dangerous. Same for aviation.
Even spacewalks have never caused death, so far.
It has a lot to do with events occuring too quickly for humans to be able to correct, prevent or avoid them. A voyage in space is a long event, where things can go wrong but where they can ben corrected because of time available.
