Egeland told reporters on Tuesday: "I've been misinterpreted when I yesterday said that I believed that rich countries in general can be more generous."

"It has nothing to do with any particular country or the response to this emergency. We are in early days and the response has so far been overwhelmingly positive," he said.

Perhaps "stingy" has a different meaning in Norwegian. He the same twit that said the US would have more money go give if only we had higher taxes, but that doesn't seem to match reality when comparing what the US is giving compared to nations with much higher tax rates.

Here's an idea for friendly internation competition: Let's see which nations donate the most to help in this and other natural disasters, both of governmental and personal charitable contributions. I think the best comparison would be on a per capita basis, and I suspect Australia is winning for this tragic disaster.

Of course, the US is sending 12 ships and some 5,000 sailors to help in disaster relief. How do you calculate the value of that?
