Right now, it looks like the USA's pullout will be followed by a collapse of the Iraqi government, election or no election. There is much intimidation of the public. If the terrorists (for they are nothing more than terrorists, not matter what the Left says) manage to prevent the election, or to reduce the turnout so that the election does not show legitimacy, then the government of Iraq may fold.
As I have said MANY times before, the Iraqi Intelligence Service holds the key to victory against terror. Once the terrorists are located, they can be destroyed by overwhelming firepower against which nothing can stand. But this firepower must be accurately directed or it will do far more harm than good.
Comparing the USA's occupation to the occupations of the Nazis or Communists is totally absurd. The Nazi and Communists never tried to establish democratic regimes and withdraw gracefully. You know that I am totally against the homicidal thugs who call themselves the "resistance". The only thing that they are resisting is freedom.
But I do not see the kind of progress that we should have made by now:
1. Capture or death of all major terrorist leaders, especially Zarqawi.
2. Reduction of terrorist attacks to a sporadic and insignificant level.
3. A sense of confidence and security by the Iraqi government, the USA, and, most important of all, the Iraqi people.

The problem is simple: The frequency and intensity of terrorist attacks does not seem to be diminishing, or at least diminishing fast enough, to permit the transfer of security to Iraqi forces.
