The military seldom lets people off that easy

A good friend of mine was an Army company First Sergeant before he retired. One day, he told me of some of the people he helped send to jail (and he had a good company, overall). One case in particular stuck in my memory. A young soldier was due to get discharged one day, but decided to leave a day early. They didn't catch him until about 6 weeks later. According to the UCMJ, being AWOL for over 30 days is desertion. They brought him back, tried him, and sent him to Leavenworth for an extended stay - all because he left a day early. Compared to that, this sailor is in a whole heap of trouble.
