The Mote in God's Eye

I knew we could count on you to do your best to distract us from the key concept of that quote, "America is absolutely awash with easily obtainable firearms", by emphasizing instead some irrelevant side issue. Rather than picking nits and diagramming sentences in an effort to divert attention from what is really happening here, you might profit instead by reflecting on some relevant Scripture:

Matthew 7:3-5.

I do fundamentally agree with your comment, though. The President is trying desperately to deal with the economy, even if you don't happen to agree with how he's going on about it. It is the GOP that is doing everything they can to obstruct and sabotage his progam, while they fire up their knuckle-dragging constituency with guns, abortions, removing taxes on the rich, and other cultural issues so dear to the Right. The only progress we've seen on their side is their sudden tacking on the immigration question. No wonder, it's what got them shellacked in the last election.

Meanwhile, since you insisted on bringing up Gallup--from the same site you linked to...

Now, getting back to what we were originally talking about...

The gun market is saturated; sporting and defensive arms are hyper-abundant and their marketing has reached the point of diminishing returns. The only way for the firearms industry and their NRA lobby to maintain sales and profits is to sell more and more devastating combat weaponry to a carefully cultivated and ever-expanding customer base. Who actually buys or is maimed by them is not their problem, as long as someone pays top dollar for them; whether it be apocalyptic survivalist, ghetto gangbanger, narcotrafficker, self-styled would-be minuteman, or skinhead militiaman. This is not about ideology or politics, its all about money.

There are war criminals, and then there are war profiteers. The first might be forgiven, for acting savagely in the heat of action, suffering from the mental and psychological effects of combat, or being brainwashed by vile ideology. The second must never be let off the hook. In the comfort of their panelled offices and Congressional cloakrooms they maliciously exploit the ignorance, greed and fear of others to help sell a product that leads inevitably to the suffering of the innocent--purely for their personal profit. Shame on you. This is the constituency you represent and defend, arms merchants and war profiteers, so spare us your meticulously documented misdirections..
