I couldn't find stats on medical R & D, but NationMaster has some on R & D personnel per million population, and on R & D Spending, though it's not clear to me if this is a percentage of GDP, of total Gov't expenditures, or what.

In either case, the US comes in fairly high up the list but not overwhelmingly so. Doesn't seem to indicate that the US is carrying significantly more (or less) than it's share, anyway.

Any other thoughts on this?
