If by "type" you're refering to older bikes that need a little work then yeh, I'm somewhat familiar. Id suggest a bottle of Naval Jelly and some steel wool for the rusted crome. Don't worry about getting the stuff on your hands, it only hurts if you've got an open cut. If you need to clean off any oily, gooey mess, do it first. Kerosene and a brush or rag work great.

Personally, if I was to put money into the bike, it would go for a good set of tires if it needs them. Cosmetics would be secondary. You'd be suprised at the results you can get with some primer,sand paper and spray paint....and a bit of practice.
