Why is NASA so Timid?
It is certainly not for lack of finding anyone to go into space. There are thousands who would risk their lives to go to LEO, the Moon, Mars, or beyond.
Is it the reaction from the Public? Bad PR for NASA. I don’t think it is that. However, deaths related to space travel does give ammo to those who oppose space exploration and think NASA’s Money could fee the homeless and solve all the World’s problems.
Perhaps it is money. If NASA had a blank check, it probably would be willing to take more risk. It works for the air force and their R&D for new planes.
