I think the whole idea of "sending a bullet to mars and back" like we did the moon, is an extremely risky proposition. The whole Mars mission should be multinational, and a much larger ship should be constructed in space (prefabed on earth), and first serve a space station before propelling it to mars. It should have a circular ring structure, tubular, several hundred feet in diameter, and spin to forgo all the immense health problems associated with no gravity, also allowing growing areas for produce. The center of the "X" structure holding the ring together would be the docking and entry place. Yes, Im sure this would be a slower trip, but much more comfortable one, with gravity, larger crew and more redundant systems. The ship to go to the Mars surface would actually be more similar to the Lunar lander and it would be attatched at the central docking port, and would redock there on its return from Mars for its return trip to earth. The ship, once back in earth orbit, would once again be used as a space station and the crew would return to earth in the CEV. Sorry but those are my thoughts ....
