Yes, there was the infamous t-shirt incident when he turned 40, and the t-shirts were sold at the SF convention he was attending that said, 'Happy Birthday Harlan Ellison, 40 short years'.
It seemed, from his essay about irritating fans, that he had grown tired of the height jokes some time prior to his 40th birthday.
