Why is it such an "extraordinary" claim now, when it wasn't considered to be one prior to 1965?
Because our state of ignorance was huge. We had no real data then. Folks then as now were projecting their WISHES on Mars as we did know there was no oxygen, etc. and some astronomers incorrectly interpreted the seasonal darkenings as vegetation growing.
