Why does Mars have to be another Earth?

This deep desire for Mars to be another Earth has long been a barrier against exploring Mars. People keep designing spacecraft to explore Mars with inappropriate predefined assumptions.

Hey folks! Mars is another planet and that's a good thing. Because Mars is different we can learn new things that we could never learn if Mars was a clone of the Earth.
