Given the atmospheric balance we know that any near-surface life is rare or absent.
Although absence of evidence is famously not evidence of absence, the lack of any modifying processes to wind erosion and meteor accumulation strongly argue that there no extant surface life.
Viking demonstrated a surface chemistry inimicable to carbon-based lifeforms
None of the above "prove" that there is no life at all on the surface of Mars, but collectively they lead us to a position where we can (for most purposes) ignore the slim possibility that surface life is present on Mars.
Any claims that there IS life have to specifically address how the above observations can be made compatible with the new claim, IMHO.
